Keep It Simple, Silly Treat Your Body Like Its A Brand New Car
Eat more unprocessed 'fuel.'
A brand new car is a major investment, as such we tend to invest more of our time in keeping them maintained so that we can enjoy a smooth ride for a long time. You know what happens to cars that aren't kept up? They don't drive well, they need frequent and sometimes expensive repairs or they just stop running altogether.
Our bodies are very similar to automobiles. Food was designed to be the fuel that runs them. In order for our bodies to function properly, we need to be eating the right amounts of carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Whole and lightly processed foods (like carrots, chicken breast and plain frozen broccoli), still resemble what they looked like when they were grown or cultivated and have vitamins and minerals that are a lot easier for your body to turn into fuel. Highly processed foods (like fruit roll ups, donuts and hotdogs) are more difficult for the body to process because they are loaded with excess salt, sugars and fats. Vitamins and minerals that your body craves are missing from highly processed foods so even after eating a heavy meal or snack your body still feels hungry (for nutrients). Am I saying that you should give up all your comfort foods. Nope. That's no more realistic than expecting one of these Get Skinny Quick diet plans to lead to long term results. An effective healthy eating plan has to be one that you can commit to for a lifetime. The good news is that even if you've been fueling your with 'hooptie' foods, you can make positive changes and get your body back into smooth running condition.
1) Rev up your metabolism by eating small meals and snacks every 3 hours, starting with breakfast. If you're not into traditional breakfast foods, do like I do and enjoy a salad or a plate of veggies with some type of lean protein. 2) Trade in that soda for calorie free water, or at least sugar free drinks. A 3 or 4 soda a day habit or a large soda at the movies has just as many calories as a burger! Many times we confuse hunger with dehydration. 3) Give low calorie, high nutrient fruits and veggies a starring role in your meals and snacks. We divide our plates in half, with veggies filling up at least half of it. 4) Meat on the other hand should become a supporting actor. Use meat as a seasoning for beans, tomato sauces or rice. You'll save lots of money and calories at the same time. 5) If you see a drive through, do a drive by. Homemade fries have less calories than the ones you get at fast food restaurants. 6) A wise man once said, If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, then you’re not really hungry. You got to know the difference. 7) Choose tomato and broth based soups and stews over cream based foods. 8) Don’t set yourself up for failure. Take on one food modification before starting another. Success comes when you don’t give up. 9) Ask for help if you’re having trouble.

Talk about a 'scared straight' diabetes story! Many people that I know and care about, including my husband have diabetes. While my husband's been successful at keeping his blood sugar levels steady, I don't think people realize the impact of allowing kids, especially children at higher risk for diabetes due to family history - consume too much sugar-filled fiber free treats. I loved Dr Oz' diabetes video http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Dr-Oz-Explains-Open-Heart-Surgery-to-His-Patient-Video
G, you're pushing tap water? Yup. It may not be the most stylish drink out there, but its the coolest.
WATER RUNS YOUR BODY RIGHT Drinking water should be on the top of your To-Do list because it:
Controls your thirst (so you don’t get dehydrated);
Keeps your body temperature cool;
Helps blood move through your body;
Helps your joints move smoothly;
Helps your body get rid of waste (through sweat or going to the bathroom);
Helps you feel full
Its calorie free and doesn't cost a penny
OTHER DRINKS CAN'T BEAT WATER WITH A STICK Replacing all other your other drinks with plain H2O is the one real Get Skinnier (And Stay Skinnier) Quick Plan that works. Drinking free water also beefs up your savings. G, how's that possible? The math is simple:
Head to Head 20 ounce Beverage Comparison
Water, 0 calories, FREE
Sports Drink, 165 calories, $1.50 per bottle
Coke, 227 calories, $1 per bottle
Lemonade, 280 calories, $1 per bottle
100% Apple Juice, 290 calories, $1.50 per bottle
If you have five regular sodas over the course of a day, that's 825 calories at $5. Now, if you switch and drink five bottles of 100% apple juice instead, you're taking in a whopping 1,450 calories and spending $7.50. People think about it - a Big Mac Extra Value Meal with large fries and a large coke only has 1,350 calories!
G, HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I BE DRINKING? The human body is 75% water, the equivalent of 10-12 gallons (uh, remember my brand new car analogy?). The American Dietetic Association estimates that people lose about 10 cups of water over the course of a day.
Women should drink at least 9 glasses each day.
Men should drink about 13 glasses each day.
That number changes depending on your activity level and the heat index. Thirteen glasses sounds like a lot doesn't it? An average water bottle holds about 2 glasses of water. So if a woman drinks 5 bottles of water and a man drinks 7, they're doing fine.
Fractured Fairy Tales: Once Upon a Time in Nutrition
CHAPTER ONE Once upon a time, all the countries in the world had more farmers than factories. Farmers got their name because they had FARMS, which were a lot like that computer game Farmville but with real dirt and sunshine. Farms were places where people made their own food. They made their own food because there were no grocery stores. Mommies and daddies taught their children how to grow and cook their own food, just like their mommies and daddies taught them. Those farmers made food from heirloom seeds. Some farmers grew wheat and used it to make whole grains for bread and cakes. Children had cows, goats and chickens named Smooth Criminal as pets, until the weekend when Smooth Criminal magically transformed into Sunday dinner. Back then nature's candy was a special treat for children. So when little boys and girls wanted an afternoon snack, they ate an apples, pears, peaches and plums from real TREES like in the forest. Fresh picked vegetables tasted so good that ranch dressing wasn't even 'discovered.' Everyone grew big and strong and healthy because they got exercise all day long working on the, that's right class, the FARM.
CHAPTER TWO Life was easier, both on and off the farm, with the discovery of electricity. Electric power helped drive the rise of factory jobs and even farmers got help from machines too. But soon, electricity started to power entertainment. TV sets started broadcasting television shows in homes across the country. What's television, you ask? Why, it's the opposite of a book, a magical box where people get entertainment without much exercise. The desire for more fun time (aka leisure) meant families had to work more outside of the home. Foods that would last on grocery store shelves got more popular than fresh picked fruits and vegetables. TV dinners and Wonder Bread were some of the first status foods. Soon TV shows had to compete with computers, video games and smart phones. Fresh chicken and cow meat was swapped for Double Downs and cafeteria mystery meat. Strangely, many people got very sick from food related cooties. People who still wanted to be big and strong had to pay for exercise.
Thankfully, that's not the end of the story!
