G, What are Time Dollars?
![]() Back on Track Charleston
At a Time Bank, of course. What's a Time Bank you ask? The premise is a twist on the barter system:
"For every hour you spend doing something for someone in your community, you earn one Time Dollar. Then you have a Time Dollar to spend on having someone do something for you. It's that simple. Yet it also has profound effects. Time Banks change neighborhoods and whole communities. Time Banks are active in 22 countries and six continents (timebanks.org)." Unlike bartering, you're not limited only getting support from the person you served. Instead, you can choose to spend your Time Dollars on any service listed at your local time bank. And all services in a Time Bank have the same value. Timebanking doesn't impact your taxes since all services have the same value. The computer programmers who helped me build germainesolutions.com will earn the same time dollar I'll get for each hour I spend making cakes and cookies for a local bake sale. Nonprofit organizations also benefit from Time Banks. Back on Track Charleston is our local Time Bank chapter. Don't live in the Lowcountry? No problem! It's easy to find a Time Bank near you. And what if your city or town doesn't have a Time Bank. You can get support in starting a Time Bank too. |
